Why Scripture Matters

"You have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work."

-2 Timothy 3:15-17

This week at MYF, we asked the tough question of "How can I trust the Bible?". Scholars on both sides of this argument will likely be working to prove themselves right until the end of time. The historical factors, the copies, translations, the human risk of error: all of these things will continue to be put under the microscope and questioned by both Christians and non-believers alike. Eventually, we can choose to trust that even if there was change over time or influence of human error, God intended it such a way. I was reading over this verse and it really struck me: scripture teaches us something new and different at each place in our journey. Sometimes it empowers us, other times it convicts. It teaches us, it disciplines us, and it prepares us to serve the Lord as he would have us. I have read this very scripture before and felt incredibly convicted to open my Bible more often, in a true pursuit of study (certainly not my spiritual gift). Today, I read it and feel encouraged in the mystery of our Christian faith, maybe Scripture is meant to change us. From translation to translation, maybe it works differently in our lives, and is speaking to us in specific moments.
